If asked, I always tell people that my favorite genre of music is sadcore, at which point I usually receive a very puzzled look. It seems not too many people have heard of that genre. To those who don't know, I offer this description from Allmusic: it is music "by and for the depressed". The main gist of the music tends to be melancholy in nature, slow in tempo, full of downbeat melodies, and usually minimalist in instrumentation. There's a lot of indie folk songs that would fall into this category. These days I would say the genre is somewhat fluid, as most artists tend to change their style and the substance of their musical output over time. So an artist that may have written a lot of sadcore music back in the day may be writing more upbeat music later on in their career. Other artists seem to linger in it. Regardless of the case, I thought I'd list some of the artists who have at least at one point written melancholy music that I had on constant repeat:
  • Radiohead
  • Elliott Smith
  • Damien Rice
  • Jaymay
  • Cat Power
  • Death Cab for Cutie
  • Pulp
  • Nick Drake
  • Rachael Yamagata
  • Fiona Apple
  • Belle and Sebastian
  • Antony and the Johnsons
  • The Good Life
  • Bon Iver
  • Azure Ray
  • Camera Obscura
  • Pedro the Lion
  • Morrissey
